Choose your own adventure, the first of a series of what the east coast of Vancouver Island has in store
There’s a stretch of Vancouver Island on the east coast, the part facing the hustle and bustle of Vancouver, just across the ocean from it, like looking at a faraway kingdom. But what that kingdom has heard in rumours, you are living: a fairy tale of Supernatural BC. From the Cowichan Valley through Nanaimo and Parksville and up toward the Comox Valley, where life settles into a rhythm that feels almost custom-built for semi-retired professionals, remote workers, and anyone craving more space and less stress.
Everything you need is within an easy, scenic 20–35 km drive.
Everything you might want- Victoria’s nightlife or Vancouver’s bustle-is still accessible, but only if you choose it, with easily accessible low-cost portals, rocked gently on the ocean or teleported through the air – but that is a story for another day!
Today’s “choose-your-own-luxury-adventure” stays entirely within 95 km total, making it effortless, restorative, and deeply connected to the land, the sea, and the lifestyle so many home buyers come here for.
Morning – Coffee Above the Ocean, Where the Day Starts Slowly
Homes in Nanoose Bay, Fairwinds, Lantzville, North Cowichan, and Union Bay often sit on gentle slopes overlooking the Salish Sea. For many new residents, that ocean-view balcony or kitchen nook becomes the most cherished “room” of the house.
You step outside with your first cup of coffee.
The air is cool.
The wind is soft.
The ocean is calm in a way that city water rarely is.
And the only sounds?

A raven, a distant boat engine, and the sigh of tide on stone.
It’s an unhurried start that sets the tone for everything that follows.
If you feel like stretching your legs after breakfast, choose one:
Option A: Neck Point Park, Nanaimo
(19–32 km from most ocean-view neighbourhoods between Lantzville & Ladysmith.)
A gentle loop over rocky bluffs and sandy coves, with eagles overhead and sea lions offshore.

Option B: Maple Bay Lookout, Duncan
(25–35 km from most Cowichan-area luxury homes.)
A quick, scenic viewpoint with vast ocean flanks framed by forest and islands.
Both offer that quiet “I’m really here now” moment without requiring more than a 10–15 minute stroll.
Midday – A Lunch That Feels Like a Treat, Not a Production
On the Island, “luxury” often means not needing to plan weeks ahead.
Reservations are nice-but not essential. Parking is easy. The pace is slower.
Two options within 20–32 km, depending on where you start:
Option A: Unsworth Vineyards, Mill Bay
(From Cowichan/North Cowichan homes: 18–25 km.)
Their lunches are bright, local, and beautifully plated-designed for long conversations and slow sips.

Option B: Locals Restaurant, Courtenay
(From Comox Valley homes: 10–18 km.)
A farm-to-table staple serving seasonal dishes in a peaceful riverside setting.

Whichever you choose, you’re never fighting traffic. You’re never circling for parking. You’re never rushed.
Afternoon – A Gentle Adventure (Still Within Your 125 km Day)
After lunch, the day unfolds with a choice between land and sea-but both stay within a 30 km radius from most luxury neighbourhoods in the mid-Island corridor.
Option A: Wildlife Cruise – Comox or Campbell River
(From Comox/Union Bay/Courtenay: 25–40 km.)
A small, intimate boat tour where humpbacks, seals, and eagles fill the skyline.

Option B: Rathtrevor Beach, Parksville
(From Nanaimo ↔ Qualicum corridor: 15–28 km.)
Wide sand flats, warm shallows, old forests, and endless sunset colours.

Whichever you choose, you’re still within your 95–120 km total day range.
Evening – A Scenic Drive Home & Early Dinner (Still Close By)
The drive between Cowichan, Nanaimo, Parksville, and the Comox Valley is one of the most underrated luxuries on Vancouver Island: sweeping ocean views, no major congestion, and a feeling of space.
For dinner- again, within 20–30 km:
Option A: Bridgemans Bistro, Mill Bay
(Home to Cowichan & South-Nanaimo owners: 20–28 km.)
Bright water views, modern West Coast dishes, relaxed ambiance.

Option B: Black Goose Inn, Parksville
(Home to Nanoose Bay, Fairwinds, and Parksville owners: 8–22 km.)
A cozy heritage pub with great comfort dishes and oceanfront green space.

Your evening drive home is quiet, scenic, and short.
Night – Balcony Conversations, Garden Lights, & Supernatural BC Skies
This is where the Island lifestyle becomes truly irresistible.
The night settles slowly.
Your garden-whether maintained by a local groundskeeper or lovingly tended b
y you-glows under warm pathway lights.
Owls call from the trees.
The ocean reflects the last streaks of pink and gold.

You might have neighbours over for a glass of wine, or spend the time in peaceful solitude.
Either way, it feels like a life where time expands rather than contracts.
And if you ever do want city lights or a louder night out?
Optional Urban Indulgences (Not part of today’s KM count):
• Victoria – ~60–90 minutes
•Vancouver (Hullo Ferry) – $20–$40 each way

They’re close enough to enjoy, distant enough that you only go when you want to.
We’ll explore those in another blog.
